    Join the National Council of Nonprofits (NCN) for a free webinar on Monday, May 19 at 3:30 pm Easternfor nonprofits on responding to federal grant cancellations. The webinar will cover how grants are being cancelled, steps grantees should take to prepare for the risk of cancellation, and considerations for organizations after cancellation. The NCN Public Policy team will also share actions that you can take now to advocate for your nonprofit organizations.


    The presentation will be provided by Amanda Fuchs Miller, President of Seventh Street Strategies. Amanda has more than three decades of experience working inside and outside of government. As President of Seventh Street Strategies, she works with nonprofit organizations, foundations, and higher education institutions to provide advocacy, policy, oversight, and communications support.

    For over a century, Norwela Council - Scouting America, has been a steadfast presence in the Shreveport area, helping shape the lives of young people across Northwest Louisiana. Founded in 1923, Norwela Council serves nine parishes: Bienville, Bossier, Caddo, Claiborne, DeSoto, Natchitoches, Red River, Sabine, and Webster.

    At the heart of Norwela Council’s mission is the commitment to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling the values outlined in the Scout Oath and Law. The organization’s focus on character development, leadership skills, and community involvement builds confident, resilient youth prepared to navigate life’s challenges.

    The Scout Oath and Scout Law guide the principles that Norwela Council instills in every scout:

    "On my honor, I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight."

    Scout Law:
    A Scout is: Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, Reverent.

    As Norwela Council approaches its 102nd year, their focus remains on growing their donor base and establishing sustainable funding to continue delivering life-changing programs to young people throughout their service area.

    The Baton Rouge Area Foundation (BRAF) has opened applications for its Impact Grants, providing up to $25,000 in funding to organizations working in early childhood development or community safety and violence prevention.

    Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) organizations in good standing and public agencies such as school districts or libraries. If your organization serves children, parents, and families—or focuses on violence intervention and prevention—we encourage you to submit a Letter of Intent by May 30, 2025 at 11:59 PM CST.

    On May 1, the Louisiana Office of Community Development – Disaster Recovery opened the Restore Louisiana Homeowner Assistance Program survey for homeowners impacted by Hurricane Francine. Completing the survey is the critical first step for homeowners seeking program assistance. The Restore Louisiana Homeowner Assistance Program is a federally funded program providing grants to eligible homeowners impacted by Hurricane Francine for:

    • Home repair or reconstruction
    • MHU (Manufactured Housing Unit) replacement
    • Reimbursement for home repairs already completed

    Program assistance will be available to qualifying homeowners located in the nine federally declared disaster parishes: Ascension, Assumption, Jefferson, Lafourche, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Mary and Terrebonne.

    The state is directly contacting potentially eligible homeowners to encourage survey participation. To qualify for assistance, homeowners must meet the following criteria:

    • Must have been the owner-occupant at the time of the disaster event and still maintain ownership throughout application period
    • The damaged address must have been the homeowner’s primary residence at the time of the disaster event
    • The damage suffered must be the result of Hurricane Francine
    • The structure must be eligible as determined by the program, which includes single family homes, duplexes, mobile homes and condominiums
    • Must be a U.S. citizen or legally documented resident
    • Must have applied for FEMA Individual Assistance following the disaster, and FEMA’s damage assessment must indicate that the damage to home is major/severe. FEMA major/severe damage includes one of the following:
        1. FEMA inspected residential damage of $8,000 or greater
        2. At least one foot of flooding on the first floor
        3. FEMA inspected personal property damage of $3,500 or greater
        4. The structure must be in one of the nine disaster-declared parishes

    The Restore Louisiana program website includes a link to the survey and additional program information. They will continue to provide program updates as they become available.

    Since 1996, the Capital Area Corporate Recycling Council (CACRC) has been dedicated to reducing electronic waste and providing access to quality refurbished technology for Louisiana families. Headquartered in Baton Rouge, CACRC serves communities throughout the state by recycling electronics and supplying schools, nonprofits, and families with reliable, refurbished computers and components.

    Mission-Driven Work
    CACRC’s mission revolves around both environmental responsibility and digital equity. By reducing electronic scrap and refurbishing technology, they actively address the digital divide while promoting sustainability. The organization’s efforts empower local communities by offering affordable, high-quality technology and educational resources.

    Top Goal: Relaunching Computers for Louisiana Families (CLF)
    One of CACRC’s flagship initiatives, Computers for Louisiana Families (CLF), first launched in 2008, is now being revitalized to bridge the digital divide more effectively. The CLF program focuses on providing affordable technology to families across Louisiana, helping thousands each year gain the tools they need for education, employment, and personal development. This initiative not only empowers individuals but also fosters stronger, more connected communities.
