Kubota Hometown Proud® Grant Program Now Open

Kubota Tractor Corporation has launched its 6th annual Kubota Hometown Proud® grant program, offering a significant funding and equipment opportunity for nonprofit community projects. This year, Kubota will award a total of $500,000 in grants to 10 nonprofit organizations across the country—one from each of their 10 operating districts.

Each winner will receive a $50,000 grant package, which includes:

$25,000 in cash funding.
$25,000 Kubota equipment voucher.
A collaborative partnership with a local Kubota dealer to bring the project to life.

Who Should Apply?

Any registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a community project is encouraged to enter. Kubota is looking for unique projects where their equipment can make a tangible difference. Past winners have included:

Agricultural Spaces: 4H barns, teaching gardens, and farm incubator programs.
Recreation: Youth sports fields, parks, playgrounds, and rodeo arenas.
Community Assets: Fairground renovations, nature trails, and green spaces.

Note: To be eligible, the nonprofit must be located within a 50-mile radius of an authorized Kubota dealer.

Since 2017, the Cenla Pregnancy Center has been a vital resource for families across Central Louisiana. What began as a single center in Alexandria has grown into a dedicated network, with satellite locations opening in Marksville (Avoyelles) in 2019 and Vidalia (Miss-Lou) in 2023.

The center’s mission is rooted in providing confidential and compassionate support at no cost to those navigating unplanned or crisis pregnancy situations. By offering a safe space and professional services, they ensure that every individual in their community has access to the care and guidance they need during a pivotal time.

This year, the organization is focused on a primary goal: increasing community awareness of their comprehensive services. A cornerstone of their work is the "Earn While You Learn" program, a long-term support initiative that begins with pregnancy confirmation and continues until a child’s second birthday, providing families with both education and essential material needs.

Cindy G. Foust Named Executive Director of ULM Foundation

Cindy G. Foust has been named the new Executive Director of the ULM Foundation. Her hiring was approved by the ULM Foundation Board of Trustees on February 27, 2026. In her new role, Foust will oversee the ULM Foundation, as well as Advancement and Alumni Relations.

“In 2018, I landed on campus to begin my career with the ULM Alumni Association. My love affair with the university came quickly after I realized the impact ULM has on its students, faculty, staff, and community. I wanted to be a part of that impact, and with each opportunity that presented itself in my career here, I was able to create a formidable path to the role of Executive Director of the ULM Foundation,” said Foust.

“Cindy Foust’s selection as Executive Director of the ULM Foundation reflects the confidence we have in her leadership, integrity, and deep commitment to our university’s mission,” said ULM President Dr. Carrie L. Castille. “Throughout this process, Cindy distinguished herself not only through her experience and strategic insight, but through her clear vision for strengthening the Foundation’s partnership with ULM and advancing opportunities for our students, faculty, staff, and community. I am excited to work alongside her and have every confidence she will lead the Foundation with purpose, transparency, and momentum.”

Foust has served as the Interim Executive Director for four months and served as a Senior Development Officer prior to that. She holds two degrees from ULM, including a Master of Public Administration with a concentration in non-profit management.

“On behalf of the selection committee, I want to congratulate Cindy Foust on her appointment as Executive Director,” said Dr. Bill Graves, ULM VP for Business Affairs and Chair of the Selection Committee. “Our committee engaged in a thoughtful and comprehensive review process, carefully evaluating each candidate’s experience, leadership capacity, and alignment with the Foundation’s strategic direction. Cindy consistently rose to the top through both our scoring and our discussions, demonstrating the vision and collaborative spirit necessary to move the ULM Foundation forward. Cindy is married to Scott Foust, and they share three children and one grandchild. Writing has always been important to Cindy. She is the owner of Alpha-Kidz, LCC, a children’s book publishing company, and she has also served as a featured columnist and copy editor for Bayou Life Magazine since 2013.

“The path to this role has had ups and downs, but at the end of each day, I leave campus feeling privileged that I get to work with people who love ULM as much as I do and who work alongside me to create resources that will support the university and its students,” said Foust.

Serve Louisiana Recruiting Partners for 1/2 Year AmeriCorps Positions

Serve Louisiana is excited to share that they are now opening the application for partner organizations to host full-time, 6-month AmeriCorps Members serving February 15th- August 15th. These members will serve 40 hours a week and will participate in Serve Louisiana's trainings and other programming alongside their full-term members who started in September.

Members provide capacity building services to their partner organizations in one of four areas (or a combo):

Social Media and Technology
Outreach
New Programs and Evaluation.

Louisiana Nonprofit - Policy Impact Survey 2025

The Institute for Nonprofit Administration and Research at Louisiana State University Shreveport seeks to gather insights from nonprofit leaders and stakeholders in Louisiana about the impacts of public policies on nonprofit operations, funding, community services, and organizational capacity.

The goal is to share the combined results and data with key leaders, policymakers, and funders about the support needs of the nonprofit sector in Louisiana.

Therefore, you are invited to complete an anonymous online survey that will take approximately 7-10 minutes. National Council of Nonprofits Launches Campaign to Reaffirm the Vital Role of Nonprofits in American Life

Apply for Free Legal Assistance as clients of the LSU Law Small Business and Community Development Clinic

Louisiana small businesses, entrepreneurs, and nonprofit organizations are invited to apply to access free legal services as clients of the Russell J. Stutes Small Business and Community Development Clinic at LSU Law. The clinic is seeking clients who cannot reasonably afford the legal assistance they need.

Under the supervision of licensed faculty, upper-level LSU Law students will begin working with about one dozen small businesses and nonprofit clients in the fall semester that begins on Aug. 18. While students will not assist clients with litigation or disputes, they will be able to help with a wide range of legal issues, including:

Entity counseling and formation
Bylaws, LLC operating agreements, and corporate governance
Tax exempt applications (Form 1023)
State and federal filing and reporting responsibilities
Employment law
Contract drafting and review
Terms of service and privacy policies
Intellectual property (copyright and trademark)
Regulation compliance
Permitting and licensing

“Many Louisiana small businesses and nonprofits are at a marked disadvantage because they don’t have the resources to access the type of helpful legal assistance that our students will provide in the Small Business and Community Development Clinic,” said LSU Law Professor Jordan Engelhart, who directs the clinic. “This is a great opportunity for small businesses and nonprofits to start out on the right foot and address potential issues before they become costly problems. Through our students’ work in the clinic, we are hoping to help level the playing field.”

Foundation Funding Opportunity Available to LA Nonprofits

The AmeriHealth Caritas Foundation has announced its 2025 grant opportunity for eligible nonprofits working to address and prevent adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). With a focus on empowering families, promoting healing behaviors, and increasing access to health care, this funding opportunity is designed to support programs that create emotionally healthy futures for children and families across Louisiana and other qualifying states.

Grants will range from $100,000 to $250,000 for one-year, project-specific initiatives. To be eligible, applicants must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits with annual revenue under $10 million and offer programming that is asset-based, community-led, and demonstrates meaningful impact, especially in high-Medicaid-enrollment communities.

The Foundation has a two-step application process.
Letters of Intent (LOIs) are due by June 25, 2025.
LOI decisions will be expected to be made by July 21, 2025.

Restore Louisiana Opens Survey for Homeowners Impacted by Hurricane Francine

On May 1, the Louisiana Office of Community Development – Disaster Recovery opened the Restore Louisiana Homeowner Assistance Program survey for homeowners impacted by Hurricane Francine. Completing the survey is the critical first step for homeowners seeking program assistance. The Restore Louisiana Homeowner Assistance Program is a federally funded program providing grants to eligible homeowners impacted by Hurricane Francine for:

Home repair or reconstruction
MHU (Manufactured Housing Unit) replacement
Reimbursement for home repairs already completed

Program assistance will be available to qualifying homeowners located in the nine federally declared disaster parishes: Ascension, Assumption, Jefferson, Lafourche, St. Charles, St. James, St. John the Baptist, St. Mary and Terrebonne.

The state is directly contacting potentially eligible homeowners to encourage survey participation. To qualify for assistance, homeowners must meet the following criteria:

Must have been the owner-occupant at the time of the disaster event and still maintain ownership throughout application period
The damaged address must have been the homeowner’s primary residence at the time of the disaster event
The damage suffered must be the result of Hurricane Francine
The structure must be eligible as determined by the program, which includes single family homes, duplexes, mobile homes and condominiums
Must be a U.S. citizen or legally documented resident
Must have applied for FEMA Individual Assistance following the disaster, and FEMA’s damage assessment must indicate that the damage to home is major/severe. FEMA major/severe damage includes one of the following:

FEMA inspected residential damage of $8,000 or greater
At least one foot of flooding on the first floor
FEMA inspected personal property damage of $3,500 or greater
The structure must be in one of the nine disaster-declared parishes

The Restore Louisiana program website includes a link to the survey and additional program information. They will continue to provide program updates as they become available.

BCF's 2025 Nonprofit Grants Program is OPEN!

Bayou Community Foundation is now accepting initial grant requests through 5:00 p.m. CST on Friday, March 7, in the first phase of their 2025 Annual Competitive Grants Program.

Since 2013, BCF has awarded 304 annual grants totaling over $2.6 million to qualified nonprofits serving Lafourche, Terrebonne and Grand Isle as part of the Foundation’s annual competitive Grants Program. View a list of BCF competitive grant award recipients HERE.

Chick-fil-A is offering an invitation to nonprofit leaders in their communities who are looking to grow and scale their leadership and organization’s impact to apply to the 12-month Chick-fil-A Impact Accelerator Cohort Program. Fifteen nonprofit leaders will be awarded into the program during the annual Chick-fil-A Impact Accelerator conference for nonprofit organizations in May.

Louisiana small businesses and nonprofit organizations are invited to apply to access free legal services as a client of the new Russell J. Stutes Small Business and Community Development Clinic at LSU Law. The clinic is seeking clients who cannot reasonably afford the legal assistance they need.

Under the supervision of licensed faculty, eight upper-level LSU Law students will begin working with about one dozen small businesses and nonprofit clients beginning early next year. While students will not assist clients with litigation or disputes, they will be able to help with a wide range of legal issues, including:

Entity counseling and formation
Bylaws, LLC operating agreements, and corporate governance
Tax exempt applications (Form 1023)
State and federal filing and reporting responsibilities
Employment law
Contract drafting and review
Terms of service and privacy policies
Intellectual property (copyright and trademark)

“Many Louisiana small businesses and nonprofits are at a marked disadvantage because they don’t have the resources to access the type of helpful legal assistance that our students will provide in the Small Business and Community Development Clinic,” said Professor Jordan Engelhart, who joined the LSU Law faculty at the start of the 2024-25 academic year to teach and direct the clinic. “This is a great opportunity for small businesses and nonprofits to start out on the right foot and address potential issues before they become costly problems. Through our students’ work in the clinic, we are hoping to help level the playing field.”

Cybersecurity Resources and Materials from the National Council of Nonprofits

Cybersecurity is mission-critical for nonprofits as cyber incidents can lead to exposure of sensitive information about a nonprofit’s employees and the people the nonprofit serves. They can also cripple an organization’s ability to carry out its core mission. With limited resources, many nonprofits are unable to hire information security professionals or implement costly enterprise-level cybersecurity solutions. To aid with those issues, the federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, through the Joint Cyber Defense Collaborative (JCDC), just released a series of materials that can help nonprofits with limited resources bolster their cybersecurity. These resources include:

Project Upskill: A series of guides designed to empower non-technical staff with the knowledge and ability to protect themselves – and by extension, their organization – from cyber threats.

Cybersecurity Resources for High-Risk Communities: A collection of tools and resources offered by JCDC and its partners to support cybersecurity for nonprofits.

Kevin Love Fund Offers Free Arts-Based Mental Health Resources for Nonprofits

The Kevin Love Fund offers a free arts-based mental health program that is designed for middle, high school and college students. Kevin Love is an NBA basketball player who has been vocal about his own mental health challenges, and he brought together mental health and education experts to help young people learn skills to share stories from their lives through creative activities.

You can hear more about Kevin’s story and what inspired him to create this program here.

Activities are designed to be flexible and additive if nonprofits are already using a mental health program with their students, or if you have very little time.

The Kevin Love Fun activities are already being delivered to more than 55,000 students, and have seen very positive results from initial research; for example, 85% of students participating in the pilot said they felt an increased feeling of belonging in the classroom after completing the curriculum. 83% of students felt they are more likely to reach out to their teacher if they are struggling.

In partnership with the East Baton Rouge School System, BRAC has created an internship program as a first step in its plan to increase the region’s young professional by 5%.

Currently the Capital Region experiences a negative net migration of young professionals, and BRAC believes this program will help businesses better connect with the future workforce by providing a work-based learning experience.

The interns are high-school seniors… enrolled at public high-schools throughout the parish. With the guidance of CEOs throughout the region, their curriculums have been enriched to build career awareness at an early age. Many are on course to accreditations in their fields of study.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southwest Louisiana, the region’s largest donor and volunteer supported 1-to-1 mentoring network, has launched the Big Defender Fund. The endowment fund was seeded using an unprecedented $1.1 million individual donation from billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott and is a means to future-proof the organization following the pandemic and years of challenging weather events that disrupted critical services to at-risk youth.

The Big Defender Fund, a designated beneficiary fund created in partnership with the Community Foundation of Southwest Louisiana, will provide BBBS of SWLA with a steady income stream to continually support their mission of creating and supporting impactful mentoring relationships that protect and nurture the potential of youth. LSUS’s INAR to co-host statewide nonprofits conference in September

Nonprofit professionals from across the state will descend upon LSU Shreveport’s campus for the Statewide Conference For Louisiana’s Nonprofits in September.

The Sept. 20 conference, which will offer professional development for nonprofit operators, is co-hosted by LSUS’s Institute for Nonprofit Administration and Research and the Louisiana Alliance for Nonprofits.

Participants will engage in a full day of trainings from nationally-recognized speakers who will address the most pressing issues facing nonprofits.

Conference topics include fundraising, employee and volunteer retention, DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion), nonprofit resilience, and sustainability among other topics.

The conference keynote speaker is Maya Enista Smith, an award-winning, innovative leader who’s building global movements in service of communities.

“Maya Enista Smith is a well-known speaker in the nonprofit sector, and we are grateful she will be sharing her expertise of building nonprofits and spreading kindness throughout our communities,” said Dr. Heather Carpenter, executive director of LSUS’s INAR.

Enista Smith served as the first executive director of Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation, where she engaged a diverse array of partners across sectors to conduct innovative research, built authentic youth-focused programming, and led effective campaigns that fostered kindness and advanced the conversation around mental health.

With nearly 20 years of experience in youth empowerment, civic engagement, and community development, Enista Smith previously served as the CEO and COO of Mobilize.org.

In addition to her work with the Born This Way Foundation, Enista Smith is a proud member of the Presidential Leadership Scholars Class of 2022. She is a recent honoree at the Anthem Awards for the Nonprofit Leader of the Year and serves on the Bullying Prevention Advisory Committee (BPAC).

WPN Grant Application Deadline - January 31, 2023

The Women's Philanthropy Network (WPN), a fund of the Community Foundation of North Louisiana, is seeking applications from programs with clearly defined outcomes that address school readiness and/or student achievement, including but not limited, to literacy services, behavioral health, or other wrap-around services. Applicants should utilize evidence-based best practices and have a track record of success.

Preference will be given to innovative programs that serve children from birth to 12th grade, that address the needs of under-served populations, and that demonstrate collaboration with other nonprofits, faith-based organizations, business entities, and/or government. Preference will be given to groups that can leverage matching funds on the federal, state, or local level. The WPN plans to award one large grant in the range of $50,000 – $100,000.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicant must be a 501c3 organization or a unit of government which provides charitable functions related to education.
Applicant must file an annual Form 990 with the IRS, if required by law.
The proposed project must serve individuals in Caddo Parish.
Applicant must have conducted an independent audit within the last three years. Non-audited organizations may apply only through the use of a fiscal sponsor or fiscal agent who has been audited in the last three years and meets all other eligibility criteria.
Programs may receive funding for two consecutive years only.

In addition, the WPN plans to award two small grants of up to $9,000 each. The focus and eligibility of the small grants are the same as listed above, with the exception that a financial compilation will be accepted in lieu of an audit.

21st Century Community Learning Centers External Organization Profile Release

The Louisiana Department of Education (LDOE) is pleased to announce the opportunity for nonprofit organizations in Louisiana to submit an external organization profile (Profile). The LDOE is required, under the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), Title IV, Part B, 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC), to provide a list of pre-screened external organizations.

The term “external organization” is defined by ESSA as: “(A) a nonprofit organization with a record of success in running or working with before and after school (or summer recess) programs and activities; or (B) in the case of a community where there is no such organization, a nonprofit organization in the community that enters into a written agreement or partnership with an organization described in subparagraph (A) to receive mentoring and guidance in running or working with before and after school (or summer recess) programs and activities” (ESSA, section 4201).

To meet the requirements for the minimum record of success, any organization submitting a Profile must:

Operate as a nonprofit in good standing in Louisiana; and
Have a minimum of seven years of experience operating or delivering services to out-of-school time programs in Louisiana.

If your organization meets the record of success requirements, you are eligible to complete and submit the Profile at LDOEExOrgProfile no later than 2:00 p.m. CDT on February 3, 2023. The next opportunity to submit a Profile will occur during the summer of 2025. LDOE will post the updated pre-screened list at https://www.louisianabelieves.com/resources/library/family-support-toolbox-library by March 3, 2023.

Please note that this solicitation will not result in a contract with LDOE. Nor does the listing represent an endorsement by LDOE. LDOE will verify “good standing” status using the debarred vendor list when the Profile is submitted and periodically thereafter. All eligible pre-screened organizations will remain on the list for two years from the date posted on the LDOE website.

How to Register

Be sure to read through the registration information prior to starting your registration. Please note that registration is a two step process. You will need to complete the registration form then you will need to fill out the required tasks on your organization profile to-do list.

1. Log in or sign up

If you had a user account on the former Give For Good platform, enter that email in the email field and click forgot password. Once you’ve reset your password, come back to the registration page and log in.
If you are new to an organization that has participated in past Give For Good events, you can gain access to your organization's profile by emailing the Mightycause team at support@mightycause.com.

2. Enter in the name or EIN of the organization you’d like to register

If you are already associated with an organization, you can select it from the list of your associated organizations.
If you are associated with multiple organizations you will need to register each one individually.
Select the organization you wish to register. This will open up the registration form.
Review your organization name, EIN, and address at the top to ensure you are registering the correct organization.

3. Complete all required questions and click Continue

Suiting 101 will collaborate with the community and high schools with low graduation and college transition rates to cultivate the academic, social, and leadership abilities of at-risk underprivileged juniors and seniors through education, mentorship, and enrichment.

The Baton Rouge Area Foundation will be launching the 2023 Baton Rouge Development Fellows Program this week.

Each year, the Development Fellows Program offers a series of workshops to increase proficiency in the field of Development. Each workshop will include a formal presentation by a local funder or development professional, followed by in-depth group discussion. The Program will give development professionals access to high-caliber experts and will enable them to develop contacts with their local counterparts.

This program is not intended for seasoned development professionals however, staff at area non-profits that want to increase their learning would benefit. Selection is based on current and future potential as a development professional, the candidate’s transferable skills, and demonstrated interest in working in the not-for-profit sector in Baton Rouge.

ICYMI: November 8th Open Congressional Primary Election Updates and Constitutional Amendments

Early voting for the November 8th Open Congressional Primary Election is scheduled for Tuesday, October 25th through Tuesday, November 1st (excluding Sunday, October 30th), from 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Citizens who want to vote early may do so in person at their parish Registrar of Voters Office or at other designated locations. For more information about the Secretary of State's Elections Division, visit www.GeauxVote.com or call the Elections Hotline at 800.883.2805.

Eleven constitutional amendments¾five passed by lawmakers in the 2021 regular legislative session and six passed in the regular legislative session earlier this year ¾ are on the ballot this election cycle. Each proposal had to receive a two-thirds favorable vote in the House and Senate to reach the ballot. Now, each amendment needs a majority vote at the polls to get enacted.

PAR’s Guide to the 2022 Constitutional Amendments reviews each proposal for the November and December ballots in the order they will appear before voters. The guide does not make recommendations about how to vote, but offers analysis and provides arguments of supporters and opponents of each proposal for voters to make their own decisions.

Louisiana Child Care Parent Poll

National survey data (December 2021) shows that a major reason job applicants turn down work at charitable nonprofits is a lack of available and affordable child care (see the nonprofit workforce shortages report).

“Nearly a quarter of survey respondents (23%) stated that the inability to find child care affected recruitment and retention.”

In advance of the 2023 legislative session, Louisiana Policy Institute for Children and the Louisiana Department of Education are leading a Child Care Parent poll. The intent of this survey is to learn about the child care arrangements of Louisiana families with children under the age of 5. "Child care arrangements" can include care and education that parents, families, and family friends provide, as well as care and education provided by early learning programs and providers like preschool, Head Start, and child care centers.

ICYMI: Last Month to Apply for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness

On Oct. 6, 2021, the U.S. Department of Education (ED) announced a change to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) program rules for a limited time as a result of the COVID-19 national emergency. Millions of non-profit and government employees have federal student loans and may now be eligible for loan forgiveness or additional credit through the Limited PSLF Waiver. Under normal PSLF rules, borrowers must make 120 payments on a Direct Loan while on a qualifying repayment plan and be employed by a qualifying public service employer. Now, for a limited period of time, federal student loan borrowers may receive credit for past periods of repayment that would otherwise not qualify for PSLF. You can learn more about the waiver here.

The waiver will allow borrowers to gain additional PSLF credit, even if they had been told previously that they had the wrong loan type or the wrong repayment plan. The waiver ends October 31, 2022. After that, normal PSLF rules will apply. This means that many borrowers need to submit a PSLF form and/or consolidate their non-Direct federal student loans by October 31, 2022, to get the benefit.

U.S. Department of Labor Proposes New Rules on Worker Classification

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) announced a new proposed rule  for determining whether workers are employees or independent contractors under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Under FLSA, nonprofits and other employers are required to pay a minimum wage and offer overtime pay for certain workers who are classified as employees. Independent contractors aren’t entitled to these or other benefits of employees.

The new rule would replace a rule from early 2021 that made it easier for employers to classify workers as independent contractors. The current rule focuses on two criteria – opportunity for profit or loss and control over work – in determining whether workers are employees or independent contractors. The proposed new rule would return to a more traditional six-factor “economic realities” test that would consider:

Opportunity for profit or loss depending on managerial skill;
Investments by the worker and the employer;
Degree of permanence of the work relationship;
Nature and degree of control by the employer;
Extent to which the work performed is an integral part of the employer’s business; and
The worker’s skill and initiative.

The worker’s skill and initiative.

The new rule may mean that more nonprofit workers need to be classified as employees rather than independent contractors and receive employee benefits. The proposed rule is open for public comments through November 28.

Separately, DOL is planning to release new proposed regulations on the salary threshold under the FLSA later this month. Currently, FLSA requires employers, including nonprofits, to pay their employees at least $7.25 per hour and to pay employees one-and-one-half times their regular rate of pay when they work more than 40 hours in a workweek. Employees are exempt from the FLSA overtime pay requirement if they:

Are paid on a salary basis (meaning they are paid the same amount each week regardless of how many hours they actually work);

Are paid at least $684 per week ($35,568 per year); and

Exercise job duties that are classified as  administrative,  executive, or  professional.

Louisiana Tax Implications of Federal Student Loan Forgiveness

The Louisiana Department of Revenue recently put out a bulletin clarifying the Louisiana tax implications (individual income tax) of federal student loan forgiveness announcement.

On August 24, 2022, President Biden announced a plan that, in part, provides up to $20,000 in student loan forgiveness to Pell Grant recipients with loans held by the U.S. Department of Education and up to $10,000 in student loan forgiveness to non-Pell Grant recipients. Taxpayers who have either a federal filing status of single and earn less than $125,000 or a federal filing status of married filing jointly and earn less than $250,000 are eligible for the federal student loan forgiveness.

For individual taxpayers in Louisiana, the starting point for determining Louisiana’s tax table income is the taxpayer’s “adjusted gross income” (“AGI”), which is defined as the adjusted gross income of the individual for the taxable year that is reportable on the individual’s federal income tax return. Because Louisiana largely conforms to federal tax law for purposes of individual income tax, amounts that are exempt from federal tax, and therefore not includable in the taxpayer’s adjusted gross income, will automatically be exempt from Louisiana tax without further action. As such, for taxpayers qualifying for federal student loan forgiveness pursuant to President Biden’s plan, any amounts so forgiven will likely be automatically excluded from a taxpayer’s AGI and exempt from Louisiana tax.

Nonprofits are not only places where people come together, but you we enjoy the trust of our communities and are already experts at remaining nonpartisan. This is more important than ever since many states have changed their rules about registration and procedures on how and where people can vote.

Advocacy is a powerful catalyst for change. It can improve the laws, policies, and systems that impact entire communities, and storytelling is a powerful tool for advocacy. Stories have the power to persuade and move people to action. Our brains are wired to remember stories more than facts alone and help make the case for why a policymaker should support nonprofits.

To raise awareness, educate and remind policymakers, media and the public of the critical role nonprofits have played during and following Hurricane Katrina, the floods of 2016, Hurricanes Delta, Laura, Ida and, lastly, the COVID-19 pandemic, we need your stories!

In no more than 500 words, please email your story about the pivotal role your nonprofit has played in each of the areas you operate and the impact(s) your organization has made as a result of your organization being in the community. If your story includes a lot of detail, remember that staying focused is key when educating a broader audience. Also, please avoid including lots of acronyms.

What are we going to do with your stories? We will craft pitches to media and share them with policymakers, so make sure you are sharing a story that you would be prepared to publicly talk about.

This is more important than ever since many states have changed their rules about registration and procedures on how and where people can vote.

White House Unveils Student Debt Cancellation Plan

Last week, the White House unveiled their plan to cancel a significant portion of student debt for millions of Americans. The Department of Education will:

Provide up to $20,000 in debt cancellation to Pell Grant recipients with loans held by the Department of Education, and up to $10,000 in debt cancellation to non-Pell Grant recipients.
Borrowers are eligible for this relief if their individual income is less than $125,000 ($250,000 for married couples). No high-income individual or high-income household – in the top 5% of incomes – will benefit from this action.
To ensure a smooth transition to repayment and prevent unnecessary defaults, the pause on federal student loan repayment will be extended one final time through December 31, 2022. Borrowers should expect to resume payment in January 2023.

The Department of Education plans to release more details about the process for obtaining debt cancellation in the next few weeks. This debt cancellation program should help reduce financial burdens on many nonprofit employees and many Louisianians who receive services from nonprofits.

2022 Midterm Election Update

Although social media and a 24-hour news cycle certainly makes campaigning and political fundraising seem like a 24/7, 365-day event, Labor Day has still traditionally marked the official kickoff of the fall political season. Some new candidates have already started their Facebook and Twitter pages and incumbents are looking for opportunities to raise more money from their base. That said, this is the time to reach out and educate all of these political candidates. The open primary election date is Nov. 8 and the general election is Dec. 10.  You will have the ear of candidates more than ever from now until election day!

Louisiana elections use the Louisiana majority-vote system. All candidates compete in the same primary, and a candidate can win the election outright by receiving more than 50% of the vote. If no candidate does, the top two vote recipients from the primary advance to the general election, regardless of their partisan affiliation.

President Biden to Sign Inflation Reduction Act

All that remains is President Biden’s signature. The House passed the climate, health, and tax Inflation Reduction Act (H.R. 5376) passed by a party-line vote of 220 to 207, and Biden plans to sign it into law on Tuesday, August 16th (it will be signed by the time you read this). IRA2022 implements numerous federal environmental policy initiatives through direct funding programs rather than tax deductions or tax credits. Nonprofits are eligible to apply for several of these programs for use in program-related activities and impact investments. On the chopping block in IRA2022 from the what was in the $1.7 billion Build Back Better legislation that the U.S. House of Representatives passed last November are universal pre-kindergarten, lower child care costs, paid family and sick leave and the enhanced child tax credit, among other provisions. 

One key early childhood provision from Biden’s original plan that could resurface in different legislation later this year is the expanded child tax credit, which expired in late 2021. It gave parents up to $300 a month per child for children under 6, and up to $250 a month for children from 6 to 17. It was widely credited with dramatically lowering the country’s child poverty rate while it was in place. The tax credit, which the American Rescue Plan made available to the nation’s lowest-income households for the first time, could still reappear in an end-of-year tax deal. Be sure to remind your congressional members (including state directors and legislative staffers) of the importance of each of the issues above and how funding these to appropriate levels strengthens Louisiana’s nonprofit sector and our communities.

Member Spotlight: F.I.R.S.T. Chance

FIRST Chance was founded in 2015 after the loss of SPD officer Thomas LaValley. Their goal is to equip and train ALL law enforcement, especially in Shreveport, with belt trauma kits.

FIRST Chance has a trauma doctor, Dr. Patrick McGauly, who comes in and teaches classes. All participants are taught to use the kit on themselves and others in the case of traumatic bleeding. These kits are invaluable when first responders are awaiting the fire department.

Junior League of New Orleans Offers Nonprofits Free Office Furniture for Pick-Up

The Junior League of New Orleans is in the process of clearing out their headquarters building as they prepare for a renovation. The organization has several items to donate to nonprofits in our region. The nonprofit would have to pick up the items as the Junior League does not have the means to deliver them. The items we have are as follows:

6 upholstered chairs for table.
100+ auditorium or conference chairs - upholstered in gray fabric.
6 foot folding table
5 foot narrow folding table
desk chairs
and many other items

Community Foundation Offers Two Grant Applicant Training Sessions

The next Competitive Grant Cycle opens on August 1. Community Foundation is offering two Grant Applicant Training sessions for all applicants. Trainings are optional but are highly encouraged for first-time applicants.

Session 1 - July 21 at 11 a.m.
Session 2 - August 4 at 11 a.m.

Navigating disasters can be complex. In the first days following a disaster, most organizations are focused on securing shelter, food, water, and supplies. That said, another critical component of recovery that warrants our focus and attention concerns legal issues.

Legal Aid Resources Webinar

The Greater New Orleans Foundation is proud to partner with Southeast Louisiana Legal Services (SLLS) for a webinar spotlighting legal issues, resources, and other information in or after a disaster. Please join them on Wednesday, July 20th from 12:00-1:00 pm for Legal Aid Resources in Disaster Preparedness and Recovery webinar with Laura Tuggle, Executive Director of SLLS.

This webinar is free, but registration is required.

Disaster Title Clearing Project

Thanks to support from AARP, Louisiana Appleseed Center and Southeast Louisiana Legal Services have launched a Coalition dedicated to estate planning, successions, powers of attorney, and related matters for low-income families impacted by Hurricane Ida. Screened and qualified applicants are eligible to have any court costs related to estate planning and clear title covered by the program. The Coalition is available to provide attorneys at your next event who can answer questions related to estate planning.

Organizations interested in more information, or that want to host an in-person educational event for staff or directly impacted communities, should contact Adrienne at AWheeler@LouisianaAppleseed.org.

Disability Rights Louisiana provides legal and advocacy services to people with disabilities around disaster-related issues like: FEMA disputes; accessing medical care, equipment, sign language interpreters in the wake of a disaster; accessing special education services after evacuating; and more. BBR Creative is now accepting applications for the 2022 CreateAthon, a 24-hour creative marketing marathon

CreateAthon is a national organization whose mission is to champion effective, nonprofit marketing through pro bono “creative marathons.” For 24 hours, the BBR team will cease all regular operations to focus their time and talents on marketing for nonprofits in the community.

Since 2019, through a partnership with CreateAthon, BBR has donated over $382,000 worth of marketing services across nine Louisiana nonprofits. This year’s event is on September 22 and 23, and will provide free production deliverables for selected nonprofits.

The Association of Fundraising Professionals' Baton Rouge Chapter is currently welcoming new members!

The Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Greater Baton Rouge has been named a 2022 Ten Star GOLD Chapter, offering members the opportunity to connect with colleagues, engage in creative thinking, network with new friends, and achieve great results in their work. AFP offers many free and discounted resources for fundraisers as well as other opportunities to grow your career and better our community.

As a benefit to achieving our Gold Star Status, AFP-Baton Rouge has the ability to gift a one-year membership to two potential new members. The Louisiana Alliance for Nonprofits has partnered with Association TRENDS to conduct a large-scale nonprofit compensation survey for Louisiana nonprofits. Participation is FREE and members of the Louisiana Alliance for Nonprofits are eligible to receive a free copy of the report if they participate in the survey. The survey will go live on February 1, 2022 and close on April 1st, 2022. Members who do not participate in the survey can purchase a copy of the report at a discounted price.
